Chrome Browser Accused of Sending Information Secretly to Google

Morrissey Technology – A report revealed that Chromium-based browsers – including Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera and Brave – have extensions that send information to Google. The information sent includes CPU, GPU usage and other data.

According to Luca Casonato, a JavaScript and Deno developer based in the Netherlands, an API was discovered that is supported by a built-in extension called “hangout_services” in the Chrome browser. This API secretly sends information about a user’s CPU and GPU usage to Google when visiting Google websites.

It doesn’t stop there, the information sent includes RAM usage on the system and tabs, as well as further information about the CPU for recording. Casonato notes that the API that enables this feature is not open to other websites and is only used by Google on its own websites.

FYI, Chrome is largely developed and maintained by Google, and provides the core code base for many popular browsers, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Brave. Non-Chrome browsers like Firefox do not have this extension, which can put them at a disadvantage when it comes to performance on Google websites.

Additionally, websites that compete with Google cannot access these Chrome APIs, raising concerns about possible violations of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).
