Online Fraud

Why Can Tech-Savvy People Become Victims of Online Fraud?

Morrissey Technology – Many people think that only the elderly and technologically illiterate people have the potential to become victims of online fraud. It turns out that young people and technology-savvy people are also quite a few victims. Google’s latest survey results found that the 25-34 year age group is a group that is vulnerable to online fraud in a number of Southeast Asian countries. This finding was also agreed by clinical psychologist from Singapore Annabelle Chow.

In a virtual media briefing with Google, Chow said that young people and educated professionals are more vulnerable to online fraud attempts due to several psychological factors. According to Chow, people who know a lot about specific things and niches are easily manipulated by online fraudsters. He gave an example of how he was once tricked by a scam website when looking for his dream alcoholic drink because he was tempted by a discount.

“The website looked very trustworthy, but it turned out to be a scam website. So I actually got scammed and ended up having to cancel my credit card and so on,” said Chow.

“So I have knowledge about gin (alcoholic drinks) and I am more vulnerable, it is easier to manipulate me in situations like that,” he continued.

Physical and mental conditions as well as the surrounding environment are also factors that make a person more vulnerable FOR4D to fraud. People who are stressed and have a lot on their minds are unlikely to focus when they receive a telephone call that turns out to be a scam, and without realizing it they have handed over sensitive information and even money to the fraudster. Fraudsters also usually urge their potential victims to act quickly without thinking. For example, saying the discount will end soon, the concert ticket quota is running out, or threatening that the victim’s bank account will be blocked if they don’t provide their mobile banking password.

Therefore, Chow advises all internet users to always be careful and think twice if they get an offer that doesn’t make sense, aka too good to be true, so as not to become a victim of online fraud.

If you find your dream cellphone at a price that is much cheaper than the price at the official store, pay attention to the seller’s website and online store to see whether it looks suspicious or not. If you find a simple app like a document reader that asks for sensitive access like location, microphone, and contacts, it’s best to avoid it FOR4D.

“So don’t be too quick to ignore the security warnings implemented by technology platforms, because basically these are designed to provide an additional layer of protection so that we can slow down and think twice before making decisions,” explained Chow.

How To Open Blocked Site

How to Open Blocked Sites on Google Chrome Mobile

Morrissey Technology – When surfing in cyberspace, sometimes users have problems because the site they want to open turns out to be blocked in Google Chrome. Here’s how to open blocked sites on Google Chrome on your cellphone. Often, this web or site blocking is caused by the internet service provider or the site itself is blocked. In this case, of course there are several methods that users can use when they experience problems accessing a blocked website. Quoted from the Cyber News page, here are several ways you can open blocked websites in Google Chrome :

1. Open the blocked site in Chrome

If Chrome has blocked a particular website, there are several simple steps users can follow to change the settings and access that site. To do this, enter the website in Chrome, then to the left of the site’s address bar look for the lock icon. Click on it and look for Site settings to change blocked status.

2. Use a VPN

If changing Chrome site rules isn’t possible, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPN can be used to access blocked sites. This is because VPNs allow users to spoof IP addresses so that the user’s true location cannot be known. Most VPN providers have apps that match the user’s platform. For example, NordVPN has native apps for Windows, Linux FOR4D, Android, Mac, iOS, and more.

3. Use a proxy site

Using this proxy is free and does not require installation, usually this site is used to open sites that are blocked due to restrictions based on geographic location. One proxy site that you can try is CroxyProxy. Then, enter the blocked site link in the column provided and press Go to process it.

4. Use an IP address

Every website URL has an IP address. URL is a series of website addresses that appear in the site address. While IP is a unique number sequence for the website hosting server. It’s possible that the network administrator who blocked the site only stores the URL, not the IP. So this allows users to be able to use a website’s IP address to open blocked web pages in the Chrome browser FOR4D.

5. Use Tor Browser

Tor Browser, a free site and browser application that allows users to maintain their anonymity on the internet, can be a way to unblock websites. Tor Browser hides the IP of the destination server and hides the IP of the destination server from the ISP. However, connection speeds may decrease when Tor is used and some websites may still be blocked.

6. Try Google Translate

Many people don’t know that Google Translate can be used to view blocked sites. Users only need to type the URL or website they want to unblock into the text box that needs to be translated. Then click the link in the translation section so users can access the page in a translated version.

7. Open the internet archive

Users can also take advantage of internet archive services such as the Wayback machine FOR4D. Wayback machine is a website that provides various website content in the form of digital archives. This website allows users to browse blocked content online.

OpenELM

Guessing The AI Capabilities of Apple’s iPhone

Morrissey Technology – Apple has tended to hide the generative AI they are working on for the iPhone. But now they have released OpenELM, a lightweight AI model that will probably run locally on their devices. OpenELM stands for Open-source Efficient Language Models. And, there are four language models released by Apple researchers, all based on Hugging Face.

According to Apple, Hugging Face operates very efficiently for text-based tasks, for example writing emails. This model is open source and available for use by developers. OpenELM is divided into four types based on the number of parameters. For your information, parameters refer to how many variables this language model understands to determine “decisions” from its training dataset. Namely 270 million, 450 million, 1.1 billion, and 3 billion parameters FOR4D.

Microsoft and Google have also previously showcased other language models for devices such as laptops and cellphones, namely Phi-3 (supports 3.8 billion parameters) and Gemma (supports 2 billion parameters).

Previously, Apple CEO Tim Cook also promised that generative AI would be featured in Apple’s newest devices. He said that Apple had spent enormous time and effort developing generative AI. They have previously released other AI models, but they have not released an AI model that can be a foundation for commercial purposes like those released by their competitors.

Last December, Apple also released MLX, a machine learning framework that makes AI models easier to run on Apple Silicon. They also released an AI model for image processing called MGIE, whose function is to process photos using text commands. There is also Ferret-UI FOR4D, which can be used to navigate on the cellphone.

Google Meet

Google Meet Users Can Now Make Annotations During Presentations

Morrissey Technology – Google recently updated the Meet app with the ability to annotate during presentations. This new feature will be activated by default when users start presenting. An annotation itself is a note made by an author or other person to explain, comment on, or criticize the text of a literary work or other written material, according to the Big Indonesian Dictionary.

With this new annotation menu, users can access various tools such as pens, ink disappears, stickers, text boxes, and more now available in the Meet app. In addition to bringing this feature to Meet, Google Meet also makes it possible to assign co-annotators. To add a co-annotator, simply open the people panel or hover over the user’s video tile, select more options (three dots icon) and select the ‘Add as co-annotator’ option. According to Google, annotation and co-annotation features are available for the following editions of Google Workspace:

  • Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
  • Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
  • Frontline FOR4D Beginner and Standard
  • Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, and Enterprise Essentials Plus
  • Educational Standards, Plus, Enhanced Teaching & Learning
  • Individual Customer Workspace

As a note, Android users can use annotations when they display their screen and select the Entire Screen option. Unfortunately, the shared annotation feature is not available for Android users, but will be added in a future update. On the other hand, iOS users cannot use annotations while presenting. However, they can use annotations if they are appointed as co-annotators by web users.

Regarding availability, Rapid Release domains will get the new features in the next two weeks, while Scheduled Release domains will have to wait until April 25 for the rollout FOR4D, which will take up to 15 days.

Internet Traffic

Be Alert, Almost Half of Internet Traffic is Controlled by Bots

Morrissey Technology – Bots and spam have now become an inseparable part of internet life. But who would have thought that the presence of bots would almost displace organic internet traffic from human users. According to the ‘2024 Bad Bot Report’ released by cybersecurity expert Imperva, bots already control 49.6% of all internet traffic. Worse, 32% of all internet traffic is now flooded by rogue bots.

“Bots are one of the most entrenched and growing threats every industry faces,” said Minerva General Manager Application Security, Nanhi Singh.

“From simple web scraping to things like account takeover, spam and denial of service, bots have a negative impact on an organization’s bottom line,” he continued.

Imperva finds rogue bot traffic. Rogue bot traffic varies greatly depending on the country. For example, Ireland is in first place with 72% of its traffic controlled by bots, followed by Germany (67.5%) and Mexico (42.8%).

Bots are not only found on social media but also in video games. According to Imperva’s findings, bot activity in the gaming world is among the largest among all sectors with 57.2% of total traffic. Other sectors that are heavily populated by bots include retail (24.4% of total traffic), travel FOR4D (20.7%), and financial services (15.7%).

Furthermore, Imperva said that rogue bots that are increasingly sophisticated and can imitate human behavior and avoid detection are often found on legal and government websites, entertainment and financial services.

This report further strengthens the ‘Dead Internet’ theory. This theory argues that organic, human-made content has been replaced by content created by artificial intelligence (AI) which is now flooding the internet and the accounts that interact with this content are also bots.

“As the number of AI-enabled tools increases, the presence of bots will become more widespread. Organizations must invest in bot management and API security tools to manage threats from malicious automated traffic,” said Singh.

Netflix

Netflix is Getting Richer Because it is Fierce About Users Sharing Passwords

Morrissey TechnologyNetflix’s strict rules preventing password sharing are indeed unpleasant for users. But for the streaming giant, this risky move made him rich. In the first three months of 2024, Netflix added 9.3 million new subscribers, bringing its total subscriber base to nearly 270 million.

And with an increasing customer base and increasing subscription prices, this has given the company a quarterly profit of more than USD 2.3 billion (Rp. 37 trillion) up from USD 1.3 billion (Rp. 21 trillion) in 2023. Despite the price increase, Netflix revealed that year-on-year subscriber growth was the highest in the last 12 months. In the first three months of this year, customer growth rose to 16% compared to last year’s figure of 4.9%.

Prevent Password Sharing

Much of this growth is likely due to Netflix’s recent crackdown on preventing users from sharing passwords. For your information, many Netflix users enjoy the service using other people’s accounts. After investors were shocked by Netflix’s reported net loss in 2020, the company implemented a paid share system. Instead of sharing accounts with friends, home users now have to pay a fee to allow other people to use their accounts.

By looking at the IP address and location of the device, Netflix checks whether the user is part of the household paying for the account. If the service detects what it believes to be password sharing, the device will be blocked and the user will be given the option to create their own account. Initially, as quoted by the Daily Mail, Netflix’s firm steps were considered a gamble by some people because customers might not be happy and run away. However, this decision seems to have yielded sweet results for Netflix FOR4D.

At the end of last year, Netflix added 13 million new subscribers, bringing the total to 260.28 million. However, Netflix actually attributes its success to the increase in quality drama content that attracts audience interest. Netflix said its biggest successes include Society of the Snow with 98.5 million views, Fool Me Once with 98.2 million views, and Griselda with 66.4 million views. Currently, Netflix maintains its top position as the most popular streaming service in the world, ahead of Amazon Prime Video which has 220 million subscribers globally.

This growth occurred because Netflix has made several changes in determining its subscription prices. In Indonesia, Netflix subscription prices currently start from IDR 65 thousand per month for the Basic package, IDR 120 thousand per month for the Standard package, and IDR 186 thousand per month for the Premium package.

Investors Are Worried

Apparently this will be the last time Netflix provides information about the growth of its subscriber numbers. Netflix announced it will stop reporting subscriber numbers starting in the first quarter of 2025.

“In our early days, when we had little revenue or profits, membership growth was a strong indicator of our future potential. But now we are generating enormous profits and free cash flow,” Netflix said.

As an explanation for the decision, they also mentioned new sources of income, which include the addition of paid sharing accounts and different subscription levels. This report also states that Netflix is enriching its content so that it becomes more varied, including expanding in areas such as games and sports. This decision, according to Netflix, has succeeded in attracting old customers and attracting new customers.

On the other hand, the announcement raised concerns among investors who saw it as a sign that subscriber growth might slow. Investors seem to be looking at the parent company of Facebook, Meta, and X/Twitter FOR4D. Both stopped reporting subscriber figures as their growth slowed.

“The decision to no longer disclose quarterly subscriber growth from next year will not go over well,” said technology and media analyst Paolo Pescatore of PP Foresight.

“The next quarter may be challenging due to seasonal factors that typically underperform compared to other regions as people spend more time outdoors,” he predicted.

Immediately following the announcement, Netflix’s share price fell nearly 5%. However, the share price is still up 30% since the start of the year, approaching its 2021 peak.

Morrissey TechnologyQualcomm is attracting a lot of attention with its Snapdragon The company based in San Diego, United States (US) has officially introduced the Snapdragon X Elite, with new details continuing to emerge. Apart from the Snapdragon X Elite, there are also rumors of a Snapdragon Now, Qualcomm has shared a short teaser video hinting at a big announcement for its Snapdragon X line of processors. A video posted on the official Snapdragon, Reported by Gizmochina, Qualcomm did not directly confirm the launch of the Snapdragon.

Adding weight to this speculation is the latest leak of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 which is rumored to be using the Snapdragon X Elite chip. Reportedly, Lenovo’s upcoming notebook could be the first to feature Qualcomm’s new SoC FOR4D.

The Snapdragon Testing shows that the chip outperforms Apple’s M3 chip by a significant margin on Geekbench. Surprisingly, on Geekbench, its performance is even equivalent to the Intel Core i7-13700HX, Core i9-13900H, and AMD’s latest flagship cellphone, namely the Ryzen 9 8945HS. If these numbers match actual performance, Qualcomm’s new SoC could provide serious competition to the established chipset industry players.

What’s more, Qualcomm recently showed off its Davinci Resolve video editing software prowess at a demo event. There are even rumors about Windows 11’s AI features possibly being exclusive to Snapdragon X Elite powered devices FOR4D. As the announcement date approaches, expect more images and information about Qualcomm’s vis for Snapdragon X in the coming days.

Delta Emulator

Delta Emulator Comes to the App Store, iPhone Users Can Play Old Nintendo Games

Morrissey Technology – Apple recently allowed emulators to circulate in the App Store. Now the first emulator is officially available on the App Store, namely Delta Emulator. Delta is an emulator developed by developer Riley Testut and previously available outside the App Store. Testut is known as the developer of the open-source emulator GBA4iOS, which has now evolved into Delta and currently the emulator has received Apple’s approval to enter the App Store.

Delta is an all-in-one emulator that supports gaming systems such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, Game Boy, and Game Boy Advance. Delta says it will support more platforms.

This emulator displays control buttons on the screen whose arrangement and appearance can change according to the system being played. Delta also supports Bluetooth controllers, including controllers for consoles such as Xbox One S, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5.

Delta also supports quick saves, cheat codes, and data sync between devices using Google Drive or Dropbox. There’s also multiplayer for up to four players for NES, SNES, and N64 as well as AirPlay streaming support. iPhone users who want to play old Nintendo games must have the game they want to play, then import it as a ROM file, and add it to the library in the Delta application, as quoted from Engadget.

iPhone and iPad users outside the European Union FOR4D can directly download the Delta emulator from the App Store. But users located in the European Union will have to use a third-party app store called AltStore to download Delta.

Delta isn’t actually the first emulator available on the App Store. Previously there was an emulator called iGBA which turned out to be a clone version of Testut’s GBA4iOS. This emulator was later kicked from the App Store for violating spam and copyright rules.

Apart from that, there is also an NES emulator called Bimmy. This emulator also didn’t last long on the App Store because the developer was afraid of being punished by Nintendo, which has recently become more strict in cracking down on emulators.

DuneQuixote

Get to know DuneQuixote, The Malware Used by Hackers to Steal Data

Morrissey Technology – Dangerous malware continues to evolve. According to the cyber security company, Kaspersky, a new type of malware called DuneQuixote is currently emerging which targets government entities, both in the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe and North America.

DuneQuixote incorporates snippets taken from Spanish poetry to increase persistence and avoid detection, with the ultimate goal of cyber espionage. With this malware, hackers are able to spy on and retrieve the target’s sensitive data.

In its official statement, Kaspersky revealed that the initial malware dropper was disguised as a corrupted installer file for a legitimate tool called Total Commander. Inside this dropper, embedded are strings from Spanish poetry, with the strings varying from sample to sample.

According to principal security researcher at Kaspersky’s GReAT (Global Research and Analysis Team), Sergey Lozhkin, this variation aims to change the signature of each sample, making detection with traditional methodologies more difficult.

Embedded within the dropper is malicious code designed to download additional payloads in the form of a backdoor called CR4T. This backdoor, developed in C/C++ and GoLang, aims to give attackers access to the victim’s machine.

Specifically, the GoLang variant uses the Telegram API for C2 FOR4D communications, implementing public Golang telegram API bindings.

“This malware variation shows the adaptability and ingenuity of the threat actors behind this campaign. “At the moment, we have found two similar implants, but we strongly suspect the presence of additional implants,” said Sergey.

Kaspersky telemetry identified victims in the Middle East as early as February 2024. Additionally, multiple uploads of the same malware to semi-public malware scanning services occurred in late 2023, with more than 30 submissions. Other suspected sources of VPN exit points are located in South Korea, Luxembourg, Japan, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United States.

To avoid becoming a victim of attacks targeted by known or unknown cybercriminals, Kaspersky researchers recommend implementing the following steps:

Give your SOC team access to the latest threat intelligence (IT). The Kaspersky Threat Intelligence Portal is a single point of access for enterprise IT, providing cyber attack data and insights collected by Kaspersky over more than 20 years.

Upskill your cybersecurity team to address the latest targeted threats with Kaspersky online training developed by GReAT experts. For timely endpoint-level detection, investigation and remediation of incidents, deploy an EDR solution like Kaspersky Endpoint Detection and Response

In addition to adopting critical endpoint protection, implement enterprise-grade security solutions that detect advanced threats at the network level at an early stage, such as Kaspersky Anti Targeted Attack Platform

Since many targeted attacks start with phishing or other social engineering techniques FOR4D, introduce security awareness training and teach practical skills to your team for example, through the Kaspersky Automated Security Awareness Platform.
